Metro Columbus Hockey League

The Metro Columbus Hockey League (MCHL) provides competitive, locally focused travel hockey for 10U, 12U, and 14U teams throughout Central Ohio. With more than 50 teams participating annually, MCHL offers a structured season that emphasizes competitive balance, player development, and meaningful games from opening weekend through the championship tournament.

The MCHL Season at a Glance

The MCHL season runs from late August through February and consists of three phases:

Phase 1: Seeding Tournament

The season begins with the MCHL Seeding Tournament, held in late August. Teams play multiple seeding games that help determine competitive placement for the upcoming season.

The purpose of the tournament is evaluation rather than standings. Results are used to identify similarly skilled teams and create balanced divisions for league play. Participation is encouraged but not required. Teams that do not participate may be placed using estimated competitive rankings and other available data.

Phase 2: Regular Season

Following the seeding process, teams are placed into divisions based on competitive level.

Throughout the regular season, teams compete against opponents within their division, creating a schedule of balanced and meaningful games. Depending on division size and scheduling requirements, teams can expect approximately 10-16 league games. All regular-season games must be completed by January 31.

Phase 3: End-of-Season Tournament

The season concludes with the MCHL End-of-Season Tournament in February.

Each division participates in a single-elimination championship tournament, giving every team an opportunity to compete for a division title. Tournament games utilize stop-time periods, overtime, and shootout procedures when necessary to determine a winner.

Divisions

MCHL divisions are formed after the seeding process to create competitive parity throughout the league. Rather than assigning divisions before the season begins, teams earn placement based on performance and evaluation data.

This approach helps ensure that teams face opponents of similar ability levels, leading to more competitive games and a better experience for players, coaches, and families.

League Philosophy

MCHL was created to provide:

  • Competitive and balanced travel hockey
  • Reasonable travel requirements for Central Ohio families
  • A structured season with clear goals and milestones
  • An emphasis on player development and sportsmanship
  • Meaningful competition from opening weekend through the championship tournament

Our goal is simple: provide the best possible local hockey experience while allowing teams to focus on development, competition, and enjoyment of the game.
